Getting Here

If you are looking at this, you’ve probably figured out whether you are flying, driving, or taking the train. For what to put on the radio if you are in a car, I usually listen to Jefferson Public Radio, which is the local NPR station (90.5). When you start residency, we should be done with the traffic circle on campus drive (campus drive highlighted in yellow, circle work is purple), so you should be able to just take the straight shot to the clinic but when you visit this year you might still have to take the detour to Dahlia, El Dorado, and Daggett (highlighted in green). If you visit early in the morning, you might see some of us biking or running up the hill to work!

The Workplace

We work at Sky Lakes Medical Center and in the Collaborative Health Clinic right across from the hospital.

The Clinic

Like you, the classes of 2024 and 2025 did not get to interview in person here.  One of the things that I was most surprised and pleased by was our amazing clinic, which was just built a few years ago.  It is a three-story building which includes our clinic on the first floor, the Sky Lakes Primary Care Clinic on the second floor, and has wound care and soon to have urgent care upstairs.  We also have a lab and x-ray right across the hallway from our own clinic.  When you are coming into the parking garage, clinic is on the left, the old building right next to the giant fancy building is where clinic used to be, and is now most of our administration rooms.  The old clinic is still there and we still use the resident library, but the rooms are not usually in use.  If you have a chance to go inside our physical waiting room, you will see the great view of the Cascades which our patients get while they are waiting for their appointments.

The Hospital

Look to the right as you pull into the parking garage and you will see the Sky Lakes Medical Center.  Park your car in the garage and go through the main entrance.  On your left you will see the coffee shop and the pharmacy, and to your right, you will see patient registration and the hospital lab.  Keep going to just past the volunteer desk to where you see the big spiral staircase.  Look up and you will see the beautiful sculptures of birds.  If you climb up to the second story and lookout the window across the Courtyard, you will see the RMT room and our Courtyard, which is why we do a lot of our work.  Is nice to be able to get outside during the day, even if I am still writing notes.  If you need a snack you can continue towards the gift shop and then take the left to get to the cafeteria, which is pretty good for hospital cafeteria, but I would recommend that you try some of our local restaurants as well.

Our hospital has 176 beds, and specialist we have available at our institution include inpatient cardiology, surgery, and gynecology. As well as access to local urology, ENT, orthopedics, pulmonology, dermatology, rheumatology, wound care, and our wellness center.

As you are leaving, look to the left to see the helicopter pad in the entrance to our emergency department.  We have just under 30 beds in the ED.  If you take a left and then another left, and then look to the left, you will see the family birthing center entrance.  We have 12 labor rooms, 3 special care nursery beds, 2 triage rooms, and 3 antepartum rooms. The other buildings that you see while you are driving around are largely our specialist offices and other people who help keep the hospital running.

Let’s Eat!

Terra Veg Vegan Eatery

249 E Main St, Klamath Falls, OR 97601, 11-2 pm Tues-Fri

China Rae's favorite place in town is Terra Veg, which offers locally sourced vegan food and is run by a mom and daughter pair.  If you go there, her recommendation is the Terra Veg plate, however everything is absolutely fantastic.  Their only downfall is that they have such short hours that it can be hard to get there, although it is a favorite post call treat during the week when she is on OB.

With its irresistible baked goods and delicious fresh baked bread, Green Blade is a great place to stop to pick up a treat and some coffee or to just drop by for a loaf of whatever looks good that day. Locally owned and run, it’s a favorite in town. I recommend getting a loaf of sourdough and following your heart when it comes to the baked goods at the counter.

Brevada Brewhouse

They also have wine and beer on tap for after work. ~Wendy Warren, MD, Faculty Member.

Physical Activities In Town

Hill Behind Pacific Terrace, OR Hogback Mountain

Eulalona Park, with walk in Pacific Terrace or up the Hill

Eulalona Park, Klamath Falls, OR 97601

One of my favorite things to do every day is walk around Pacific Terrace! If you park at Eulalona Park, you can just walk around there, or you can take what I call the Pacific Terrace Loop (in Yellow). If you want a little hike, go straight up Del Moro Street and get on the trail up the hill! You can go as far as you want. It’s very scrubby with little tree cover, so better for a day that you don’t need shade, and don’t forget water and a hat! You can see the whole town from the hill, including the hospital buildings!

Moore Park, with park, hiking, disc golf options

740 Lakeshore Dr, Klamath Falls, OR 97601

Less than 10 minutes from the hospital is Moore Park, home to more than 15 miles of well-maintained trails (thanks to Klamath Trails Alliance), a mountain bike skills park, tennis courts, sport fields, and a disc golf course. Perfect for a weekend hike or evening walk, the park is rarely busy and offers beautiful views of Upper Klamath Lake and Lake Eulalona. Keep your eyes peeled for bald eagles in the winter and newborn fawns in early summer.

Link River Trailhead

Located right next to Moore Park on Lakeshore drive, the the Link River trail is a nice little walk along the Link River. Great for seeing waterfowl and listening to the birds, and also a good spot to find some wild blackberries when they are in season! It’s an easy trail without much incline and is a there-and-back deal, and would be suitable for little ones or dogs.

Out of Town Adventures

 Within 1 hour

Wood River Wetlands

39278 Modoc Point Rd, Chiloquin, OR 97624

An amazing nature refuge next to Chiloquin, the wood river wetlands is an important habitat for many of our migratory birds. The trail is flat with little tree cover, and offers a great view of the cascade mountains. You are sure to see several species of waterfowl! You can do this trail as a there-and-back, or you can take a longer loop around, depending on how much you want to do!

Paddle Board Wood River

Jackson F. Kimball State Recreation Site, Chiloquin, OR 97624

The wood river is a great place to take a paddle, kayak, or other boat-like device. The best way to do it is to take two cars so that you can park a car at the Wood River Access Area and then start from the Recreation Site. The paddle is anywhere from 2-3 hours, and is an easy trip down the river. Good for adults, kids, dogs. Don’t forget your sunscreen and life vest! If you don’t want to paddle the river, you could just play on the banks at the Recreation site, but be warned, the water is COLD!

Lake of the Woods

Oregon 97601

The perfect getaway! This high mountain historic lake resort sits beside one of the clearest natural lakes found in the Southern Oregon Cascades. One can enjoy cabin life, comfort food, the wonders of nature, and a variety of outdoor recreational activities... summer & winter!

Mountain Biking

OC and E Woods Line State Trail

Oc&E Woods Line State Trail, Klamath Falls, OR 97603

Cross country skiing

Bring your skis and ride the slopes of Brown Mountain. At 7,311 ft. you’ll also have awe-inspiring views of the Sky Lakes Wilderness and Mountain Lakes Wilderness areas. You’ll enjoy this fun ride on a volcano, but watch out for “hot spots”.

  • Odessa Campground

NF-3639, Klamath Falls, OR 97601

28121 Rocky Point Rd, Klamath Falls, OR 97601

 Over 1 hour

Lava Beds

1 Indian Wl, Tulelake, CA 96134

With so many volcanoes around, it should be no surprise that we have some awesome lava tubes around! An hour out of town to the south in California you can experience the tubes for yourself. Take a helmet and a head-lamp so that you don’t hurt yourself, and go to the visitor’s center to get oriented before going into the caves! A fun and easy day trip for the family.

Crater Lake

Oregon 97604

Perhaps our most famous lake, Crater Lake is an easy day trip out of town. Clear and blue and beautiful, it is a great place to hike or bike and experience the wonder of this amazing volcanic land form.

Redwoods at Redwood National & State Park - Hiouchi Visitor Center

1600 US-199, Crescent City, CA 95531

While you COULD make the 3-4 hour drive to the Redwoods in a day, I highly recommend getting a camping spot so that you can drive in one day and drive out the next. The redwoods are truly magnificent, and while you are visiting the big trees you can also hang out on the beautiful Northern California coast.

McLoughlin

Mount McLoughlin is a dormant steep-sided stratovolcano, or composite volcano, in the Cascade Range of southern Oregon and within the United States Sky Lakes Wilderness. It is one of the volcanic peaks in the Cascade Volcanic Arc, within the High Cascades sector. A prominent landmark for the Rogue River Valley, the mountain is north of Mount Shasta, and south-southeast of Crater Lake. It was named around 1838 after John McLoughlin, a Chief Factor for the Hudson's Bay Company. Mount McLoughlin's prominence has made it a landmark to Native American populations for thousands of years.

Shasta

Mount Shasta is a city in Siskiyou County, California, at about 3,600 feet (about 1.1 km) above sea level on the flanks of Mount Shasta, a prominent northern California landmark. The city is less than 9 miles southwest of the summit of its namesake volcano.
