Student Electives

Our clinic hosts many visiting students throughout the academic year. We offer a family medicine sub-internship for third and fourth year medical students affiliated with an accredited medical school intending to match into a family medicine residency.

Rotation Details 

Rotations are scheduled for four weeks. On a case by case basis, course length may be adjusted to meet student needs. Rotations are typically scheduled with two weeks spent in clinic, one week on inpatient with the resident medical team, and one week on OB with residents.  

In clinic, students may precept their patients with either the attending physicians or upper level residents. Students manage patients as an intern on the inpatient medicine service for two weeks and participate in outpatient care for two weeks. They are expected to take call with an intern once weekly while on the inpatient service. If obstetrical experience is desired, some involvement in deliveries may be available. 

This elective provides an excellent opportunity to check out the program and life in Klamath Falls! 

Requirements 

The below documents will be required at the time of applying as well as a $20 application fee: 

·         Completed application 

·         USMLE or COMLEX transcripts 

·         CV 

Upon application acceptance, applicant will be required to supply the below documents for onboarding at Sky Lakes Medical Center: 

·         A photo 

·         Letter of good standing from program 

·         Copy of liability insurance 

·         Drug screening 

·         Background check 

·         BLS 

·         OSHA compliance 

·         Bloodborne pathogen training certificate of completion  

·         Hep B vaccination or declination  

·         TB Screening  

There must be an affiliation agreement in place between Sky Lakes and your school 5 weeks prior to your rotation start. 

Logistics of Coming to Klamath 

Advice on how to get to Klamath

OHSU owns student housing in downtown Klamath Falls. Visiting students may be eligible to rent one of the units during their rotation. Availability is based on open units after OHSU usage.  

The cost is $850 for 4 weeks and can be prorated. The price includes all utilities, internet, and parking.  

The Balcony Apartment units are personal rooms & bathrooms and connect to a communal kitchen and living area. The Kern Apartment units are individual apartments including 1 or 2 bedrooms, 1 or 1.5 bathrooms, full kitchens, and living space. Each apartment has communal laundry that is free to use. Linens and cooking dishes & utensils provided.

*Cleaning services are not provided. Student are required to wash all used linens and clean apartments before departure. Pets not allowed.

Fall 1: 09/30/2024 - 10/25/2024

Fall 2: 10/28/2024 - 11/22/2024

Fall 3: 11/25/2024 - 12/20/2024

Winter 1: 01/06/2024 - 1/31/2024
