Trauma Training
Residents are given the opportunity to tailor their learning settings in the second and third year. As a result, residents can choose to use 4 weeks of their elective time to participate in the Cascades East trauma training program.
When second and third year residents opt into the trauma training program, they first obtain ATLS certification and spend additional elective rotations in the emergency department. We learn to lead the stabilization of trauma patients as a member of the trauma team, preparing us to work in rural emergency departments after graduation. Trauma stabilization means being comfortable standing at the front of the bed knowing that others will look to us for direction as team leader. The first two classes of trauma residents are currently working in rural emergency departments as part of their scope of practice. To prepare for this role, our program includes:
Quarterly Trauma Committee meeting participation
Trauma resident pager system. Trauma residents receive trauma pages while on specific rotations or on days where they sign up for call
Resident-lead trauma stabilization under the guided supervision of ED/surgical physician with only one resident allowed at a trauma at a time
Incorporation into leadership positions
Increased volume, quality and variety of procedures during trauma stabilizations
